Fungal skin infections
The regional formulary will not cover all eventualities for infections medicines choices. As with any condition; patient specific factors and sensitivities need to be considered. Please consider this regional formulary advice alongside any relevant local Board guidelines.
Treatment of dermatophyte infection
Terbinafine
Terbinafine 1% cream
Apply 1-2 times daily for 1-4 weeks, continue for 1-2 weeks after healing.
Clotrimazole
Clotrimazole 1% cream
Apply every 8-12 hours for 4-6 weeks, continue for 1-2 weeks after healing.
Prescribing Notes:
- If intractable dermatophyte skin infection or scalp infection send skin scrapings and if infection confirmed use oral terbinafine or itraconazole. Discuss scalp infection with dermatology.

Treatment of candida infection
Clotrimazole
Clotrimazole 1% cream
Apply thinly 2-3 times daily and continue for at least 2 weeks.
Prescribing Notes:
- Miconazole 2% cream is recommended for the treatment of breast and nipple thrush in lactating women; apply after every breastfeed for 2 weeks. Continue 10 days after improvement is noted. Any residual cream should be gently wiped off before the next feed.
- Infection can spread easily between mother and infant; therefore, mother and infant should be treated simultaneously even if no oral lesions are present.
