Antimicrobial prescribing guidance

The regional formulary will not cover all eventualities for infections medicines choices. As with any condition; patient specific factors and sensitivities need to be considered. Please consider this regional formulary advice alongside any relevant local Board guidelines.

All NHS Boards in Scotland have Antimicrobial Management Teams (AMTs) to support the prudent prescribing of antimicrobials across both primary and secondary care. The AMT works in collaboration with the infection prevention and control team, infectious diseases, microbiology and all the other clinical teams. Refer to local board antimicrobial prescribing resources for prescribing information on secondary care management of infections.

Representatives, including members of AMTs, from NHS Ayrshire & Arran, NHS Dumfries & Galloway, NHS Forth Valley, NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde and NHS Lanarkshire collaborate on West of Scotland Formulary infections chapter recommendations. The infections formulary recommendations aim to support antimicrobial stewardship by providing prescribing recommendations for the management of common infections.
