Scottish Government guidance explains that liothyronine should only be prescribed for certain stated exceptions (see prescribing notes). Note that oral solution is the most cost-effective preparation.

Prescribing Notes:
- Levothyroxine tablets can be crushed and dispersed in water for administration. This is an off-label use, but more cost-effective option compared to oral solution. Refer to local board policies on the use of unlicensed (and off-label) medicines for further guidance.
